Best Skin Care Tips and Treatments Guest Article: The Benefits Of Using Aloe Vera For Skin Care And More
BY ELIZABETH ROCCHINO

Aloe vera has been used for a host of purposes since the ancient Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality.”

Since then, its uses have become more targeted and medicinal, and it's one of the leading therapies for sunburns.

Aloe vera is a cactus plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family. It grows in dry climates such as those found in parts of Africa and India and has been used medicinally for centuries.

Aloe leaves secrete a clear gel that when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin.

Various studies have been conducted to examine the benefits of the aloe vera plant and it was found out that aloe vera does in fact have several properties that are effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, from flaky or dry skin, cosmetic ailments, hair and scalp problems to many more.

It is also said to be useful in treating wounds and burns, minor skin infections, cysts, diabetes, and elevated blood lipids in humans, and shows some promise in treating more serious and persistent conditions such as eczema, genital herpes, dandruff, psoriasis, canker sores, skin ulcers and others, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Here are 8 benefits of using aloe vera gel:

1. It treats sunburn.
Aloe Vera helps with sunburn through its powerful healing activity at the epithelial level of the skin, a layer of cells that cover the body. It acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps replenish its moisture. Because of its nutritional qualities and antioxidant properties, the skin heals quicker.

2. It acts as a moisturizer.
Aloe moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily skin complexion. For women who use mineral-based make-up, aloe vera acts as a moisturizer and is great for the face prior to the application to prevents skin drying. For men: Aloe vera gel can be used as an aftershave treatment as its healing properties can treat small cuts caused by shaving.

3. It treats acne.
Aloe vera gel contains two hormones: Auxin and Gibberellins. These two hormones provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin inflammation. Giberellin in aloe vera acts as a growth hormone stimulating the growth of new cells. It allows the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring.

Aloe is soothing and can reduce skin inflammations, blistering and itchiness, while helping the skin to heal more rapidly. Additionally, in Ayurvedic medicine, Aloe is used to effectively heal chronic skin problems, such as psoriasis, acne and eczema.

4. It fights aging.
As we age, everyone begins to worry about the appearance of fine lines and the loss of elasticity in their skin. Aloe leaves contain a plethora of antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and E that can help improve the skin's natural firmness and keep the skin hydrated.

Best Skin Care Tips and Treatments Guest Article: What is MSM?

Occasionally, when we at Lexie’s of Louisville come across a Best Skin Care Tips and Skincare Treatments Article from guest writers and site we like to share it with our followers and users of our skincare products.  These are GREAT articles designed to help you address your skin care problems, applications trips and buying decisions.  Healthy Skincare is our thing – we LOVE to help!  Also, if we have a relevant product that will address these issues we’ll share it.

Best Skin Care Tips and Treatments Guest Article: What is MSM?

MSM is an organic sulfur compound. It is contained naturally in the food or it should be, but often it disappears or is significantly reduced because of the over processing done.

How much MSM should I take?

Best to start with between 500 mg daily. This for about one week and then rise to 1000 mg daily and take this for a week. Go on like this for several weeks adding 500 mg at one time, until you are taking 10 gr. daily. This will makes up for the years of deficiency that your body has experienced. Then reduce the amount to a maintenance level for whatever works for you. This is a balance between addressing what you want to address and being able to sleep as well as you would like at night. For most people the maintenance level is between 1 and 2 teaspoons (4000 to 8000 mg) per day. Always drink LOTS of water when starting on MSM or when increasing the amount you are taking.

How many milligrams of MSM are in a teaspoon?

There are about 4000 mg (or 4 grams) of MSM in a measured level teaspoon.

What is 'detox'?

MSM enables your cells and tissues to release toxins that have built up over the years. Apparently sulfur is a vital part of our waste management system, and if we have not had enough of it our bodies were not able to release some of the waste substances. If you take too much MSM, your body will release too much waste at one time for your kidneys and liver to handle. This waste in your blood stream can cause all kinds of problems ranging from flu-like symptoms to re-experiencing the effects of drugs that you have taken in the past. For example, heavy caffeine users may feel extra jittery. The key to reducing or eliminating detox symptoms is to start on MSM slowly so that the waste in your tissues is released slowly and to drink lots of water so that the released toxins will be flushed out of your body quickly.

What do I do if detox symptoms happen anyway?

If the symptoms are not bad, they should go away in a few days. Be sure to increase your water intake - for most people this would be double the amount of water that they normally drink. If the symptoms are severe, cut back on the MSM and take baths with water hot enough to make you sweat, but not so hot that you might pass out. Limit the baths to 20 minutes in length. You may find it helpful to add ONE of the following to the bath water and alternating between these for different baths: a cup of vinegar or a cup of baking soda or a cup of epsom salt. These substances each help leach out different toxins through your skin. (BeiYin's remark: For me a *Sauna* works best, preferable with *Ozone*, 25 minutes, twice a week.)

Is MSM the same as DMSO?

Although they are related, MSM has one more oxygen atom than DMSO does and that difference makes it a significantly different substance. Another example of a difference of adding an oxygen atom can be seen by comparing carbon monoxide (a deadly gas) with carbon dioxide (a harmless gas).

I have arthritis. What works?

In 'The Miracle of MSM - The Natural Solution for Pain', the doctors who wrote the book used MSM in their medical practices for arthritis patients. They found that when MSM was combined with 1500 mg of glucosamine each day that it provided more pain relief than either the MSM or glucosamine alone. They did not find that chondroitin provided substantially any more relief. However, a recent article in a popular consumer magazine cited several studies where both glucosamine and chondroitin were found to provide substantial benefits when used alone. There is currently a major study being conducted to see if both glucosamine and chondroitin combined provide more benefit than either one alone. One of the glucosamine studies found measurable differences in the x-rays between the glucosamine group and the control (non-glucosamine) group which provides much more subjective evidence that glucosamine produces substantial benefits to those taking it. Again, remember that in clinical use it was found that MSM and glucosamine used together provided the most relief.

Where does MSM come from?

MSM is a naturally occurring, sulfur containing organic compound found primarily in fresh fruits and vegetables and in every cell of the human body. The highest natural concentration of MSM is found in mammal's milk. MSM is an organic compound and commercial MSM is a pure, simple molecule that is indistinguishable from a molecule of MSM found in nature. MSM is derived from DMSO. MSM occurs when DMSO is oxidized. MSM is a naturally occurring compound found in significant amounts in nerve tissue, skin, hair and joints.

Why use MSM instead of DMSO?

DMSO causes some side effects such as reddening and itching of the skin, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, excess intestinal gas, and allergic reactions. DMSO has a strong sulfur odor resulting in a garlic smell. None of the side effects are dangerous just unpleasant. MSM is safe and odorless and does not have the side effects as DMSO. However, one property of DMSO when applied externally acts as a powerful carrier for other substances, including toxic ones. These substances are carried into the body through the skin and mucous membranes, where they can do damage. DMSO is sold from commercial outlets mainly for industrial and animal use only and should always be handled with care.

What happens if my body does not get enough sulfur?

Sulfur is found naturally in the human body. Sulfur is stored in every cell of the body. Your body won't be able to repair or replace damaged tissue fast enough. If this occurs, the body compensates by producing abnormal cells that may lead to illness and disease. You will also experience a sensitivity to pain. Sulfur deficiencies are also associated with gastrointestinal problems, a poor immune system, arthritis, and rheumatism, memory loss and acne. It can also lead to brittle nails and hair, dermatological problems and dry skin.

What are the available forms of MSM?

MSM comes in forms of capsules, crystals, flakes, powder, tablets, lotion and gel.

How much MSM should I take and in what form?

You should take whatever form is convenient for you. You should always take the least possible amount of msm that gives you the relief you desire. Drink lots of water with msm. For first time users of MSM, it is better to take with meals to help prevent heartburn. First time users start at a low level and build up. Try 500-1000 mg (eighth to a quarter teaspoon) per day. Take it for that way for one week then increase it another a little more. Once you have taken it a long time you will be able to take it without food. The recommended dosage is 2,000 to 6,000 mg. per day. Please be aware that a single dose of MSM will not help! The recommended dosage for a person weighing 150 lbs. should begin by taking 1/2 teaspoon once in the morning and mid afternoon. MSM needs to be taken for at least 1-2 weeks or even up to two month before you may see results. When MSM is taken by mouth with meals whether it be capsule, crystal, flake, powder or tablet form, the body will distribute MSM where it is needed. The precise dose of MSM is not really that critical. For the first week or two, larger doses of MSM may be needed to compensate for an extreme deficiency and depending on your situation . For general maintenance start out slow, take 1/2 teaspoon 2-3 times a day. then take more each day until you build up to 6,000 mg. Then once you see improvements continue same dosage for about 1 month, then reduce intake as general maintenance (1/2 teaspoon 2-3 times a day).

Is sulfur the same as sulfa drugs and sulfites?

No. Organic sulfur is a nutrient, a necessary part of natural chemical processes in the body. It should not be confused with sulfa based drugs or sulfites, which are forms of inorganic sulfur. Sulfa drugs are synthetic, meaning that they do not occur naturally. They are used for the purposes as antibiotics, which in some people cause allergic reactions.

How does MSM help the skin?

MSM is great for your skin if you have acne. MSM acts to keep the skin's cells and the tissue soft. Keeping the skin soft ensures that it remains elastic enough to allow stretching and movement without damage. Smooth, flexible skin is less prone to wrinkles and dry flakiness. It even helps stretch marks. MSM benefits the skin and internal organs.

How does MSM help your hair and nails?

Sulfur helps the body to form keratin, the protein that makes up the main part of the outermost layers of your hair and nails. It is a tough, fibrous protein that is very resilient to the effects of damaging chemicals and other harmful agents. Each strand of hair has its own keratin supply, which is stored in the root. Sulfur is also contained in biotin, a B vitamin that is essential for shiny hair and strong nails. You may be interested to know that the natural inclination of hair to be straight or curly is maintained in part by the sulfur amino acids. MSM benefits dry scalp and hair and improves nail growth and benefits your cuticles and nails. My nails are nice and strong now along with being whiter!

How does MSM help with allergies?

Allergies are reactions set off by a breakdown in the normal functioning of the body's immune system. When this happens, a varied range of symptoms are manifested, including sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, headaches, and sleepiness, other reactions include hives, stomachache, and sore throat. MSM goes straight to the cause of allergic reactions. In this web site you learned that MSM softens the skin. It does this by softening the walls of the body's cells, which are then more easily penetrated, allowing enemy substances to be flushed out. Flushing these allergens out of the body eliminates the need for the body to react allergic ally to get rid of them. This process cannot happen when the cell walls are hard and impenetrable. MSM prevents allergic reactions by coating the gastrointestinal tract in a way that makes allergen bonding impossible. Research has shown that daily doses of MSM have substantially increased resistance to environmental, food, or drug allergens.

Aloe vera is a succulent plant species that probably originated in northern Africa. The species does not have any naturally occurring populations, although closely related aloes do occur in northern Africa.[1] The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine since the beginning of the first century AD. Extracts from A. vera are widely used in the cosmetics and alternative medicine industries, being marketed as variously having rejuvenating, healing or soothing properties. There is, however, little scientific evidence of the effectiveness or safety of A. vera extracts for either cosmetic or medicinal purposes, and what positive evidence is available is frequently contradicted by other studies.

Skin Treatments Guest Article: Shea Butter Benefits and Uses

HeavlyRooted-header

Introduction to Shea Butter?
Shea Butter has been around for quite some time, centuries in fact.  Shea Butter is local to Africa, which is where it is used the most for its benefits to skin and hair. Recently, though, it seems as though Shea Butter's benefits have been discovered off continent. This is because Shea Butter is beneficial to all people, races and nationalities, not just any one group! You can find Shea Butter in its pure form, or as an ingredient in other products.

What is Shea Butter?
Shea Butter is only found in Africa.  It is extracted from the seeds of the Shea-Karite tree. These seeds or nuts are then removed of their outer shell.  These nuts are then crushed by hand so that they can be slowly roasted into a nice butter.  After this is done, it is kneaded by hand in large basin of water to separate the oils. It's this fatty acid that gives Shea Butter its unique natural restorative properties and makes it far superior to other organic butters. Finally, the Shea Butter is removed off the top of the pot, and cooled until it hardens.

Shea Butter is an all natural organic product (edible), and as a result one will vary slightly from another in smell, appearance, and quality.  The majority of the Shea Butter variation found will depend on where the Shea Butter is produced and how or if the Shea Butter is refined.

Shea Butter Appearance & Composition?
Shea butter should be yellowish or ivory colored. White Shea Butter can be found, and usually has this color because it has been highly refined.  Heavily Rooted does not endorse refined Shea Butter because it's original restorative properties would have diminished.

How Does or Should Shea Butter Smell?
Shea Butter is a natural organic product, and thus has a natural nutty smell. This smell isn't unpleasant to most, but some manufactures may include a fragrance to counter the natural smell of the Shea Butter. If you have an unrefined Shea Butter that has no smell, it is probably old.  This is because Shea Butter loses its smell over time.  Once the smell is gone, it is best to dispose of the remaining Shea Butter.

For unrefined Shea Butter, the natural smell is removed during the refining process  just like most of the natural and organic restorative properties the Shea Butter once held.

Is all Shea Butter the same?
No, not all Shea Butter is the same. As you look deeper into Shea Butter you will find two major categories.  unrefined Shea Butter, and refined Shea Butter.  The difference lies in how the Shea Butter is extracted from the nut of the Shea-Karite tree as detailed earlier.

Unrefined Shea Butter is extracted in the process detailed above, using water.  This is done usually by hand in an African village, but will leave many of the natural restorative properties in the Shea Butter.
Refined Shea Butter may be treated with chemicals that remove color and it's natural smell, rather than using water.  These chemicals tend to strip not just the smell and color, but many of the restorative qualities that make Shea Butter advantageous over so many other butters.

Shea Butter Uses?
Shea Butter is often used as a base for medical ointments, and has been claimed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Shea Butter is also claimed to be effective treatment for the following conditions: fading scars, eczema, burns, rashes, dry skin (moisturizer), sun burn, skin peeling, dark spots, skin discolorations, blemishes, wrinkles, soften skin, chapped lips, stretch marks (pregnancy), wrinkles, hair luster and irritation from psoriasis.

Shea Butter is effective in at least four categories: Anti Aging, Healing Aide, Prevention, Skin Protection.

Best Skin Care Tips and Treatments Guest Article: MSM - What You Need to Know

MSM Benefits

Sulfur seems to be important in the strength and maintenance of joint tissue, especially cartilage. Since sulfur is a significant component of MSM, one possible benefit of MSM is in the treatment of joint problems such as sports injuries, osteoarthritis and tendinitis. MSM also seems to help reduce inflammation [source: MSM Guide].

Many people with joint injuries or early signs of osteoarthritis take supplements such as glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin in an effort to stave off further joint damage [source: Shiel]. Although its benefits have not been proven, you might also be able to use MSM this way -- either as a supplement or as a topical gel on the skin of the affected joint [sources: Mayo ClinicMSM Guide].

It's important to note that MSM is not an acute pain remedy. Patients and doctors alike hope that MSM helps the body's own repair and maintenance systems work better -- but if you've just sprained your ankle, you should be reaching for the ibuprofen, not the MSM.

There are a few indications that MSM may help with certain respiratory conditions, such as asthma, seasonal allergies and snoring. But clinical proof is slim. Many more studies are needed to establish whether MSM has true medical benefits, and if so, what they are [sources: LangMayo Clinic].
At least one doctor notes that, while the body does need sulfur -- which is an essential mineral -- supplemental MSM may not be the best way to get it. Dietary sulfur comes from the digestion of protein-rich foods (meat and dairy products, legumes, eggs and nuts), so you may be getting enough from whatever source of protein you choose to eat [source: Lang].

The nutritional-supplement industry touts MSM as a muscle-builder and a hair-grower. We'll explore those claims in more detail later.

Even if the claims of MSM's effectiveness need more proof, it might be tempting to take the supplement anyway, just in case it does work. Can MSM ever hurt you?

MSM Side Effects

As nutritional supplements go, MSM seems to be one of the safer ones out there. No studies have established any toxicity or toxic buildup [source: MSM Guide]. If you take too much MSM, you may experience a bit of diarrhea, nausea or headache [source: Mayo Clinic]. But that's probably it. However, there may be other side effects depending on the quality and production of your MSM supplements.
Sulfur is what makes rotten eggs smell so bad, and some sulfur-based supplements have been known to have particularly stinky side effects. MSM typically doesn't do this, but you should make sure your supplement doesn't contain other sulfur compounds [source: The Arthritis and Glucosamine Information Center].

MSM occurs naturally in several foods, such as pine nuts and milk, which has led to speculation that people with some food allergies can't take MSM supplements [source: MSM Guide]. Although there are nutritional supplements (such as glucosamine) that are off-limits to certain food allergy patients, that's not the case for MSM. All MSM in supplements is synthetically produced [source: MSM Guide].

However, that doesn't mean you're home free on the allergy front. Different manufacturers may combine MSM with different ingredients. Before taking MSM, you do need to check these ingredients for allergens or other chemicals that might be contraindicated with your current prescriptions.

Even more importantly, be aware that the quality of synthetic MSM can differ dramatically. Some inferior MSM supplements contain trace amounts of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, and those most certainly can build up in your system, with toxic effects. If it's produced at plants that produce other synthetic chemicals, some MSM may contain other contaminants, such as benzene or -- depending on the manufacturer -- pesticides [source:Bergstrom Nutrition].

How do you steer clear of such dangers? Look for MSM that has been purified by distillation, not crystallization. The crystallization process is where toxic elements can accumulate. Distilled MSM, on the other hand, ought to be chemically identical to the naturally occurring molecules [source: MSM Guide].
What if you're hoping to use MSM to build up something non-toxic -- say, hair or muscle?

Skin Treatments Guest Article: Modest' Arthritis Benefit Seen From MSM

Sulfur Supplement Helps Relieve Pain From Knee Osteoarthritis, Small Study Suggests

WebMD Health News
Aug. 24, 2005

A sulfur supplement called MSM offers "modest" pain relief from knee osteoarthritis, a small study suggests.

MSM -- methylsulfonylmethane -- is a popular supplement for which a number of health claims are made. However, rigorous scientific studies of MSM are few and far between.

Now there's a bit more evidence, thanks to a pilot study presented at this week's meeting of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians in Phoenix.

Study leader Leslie Axelrod, ND, of the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Ariz., has already been prescribing MSM to patients with arthritis. She says she's glad to have evidence to back up her clinical impression.

"MSM is a viable option for the treatment of osteoarthritis," Axelrod tells WebMD. "It is valuable to use it in conjunction with dietexercise, and other things that are beneficial for arthritis patients. Our study shows that MSM significantly reduces pain and increases physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis."

Small Study, Modest Benefit for MSM

Axelrod's team enrolled 50 men and women, aged 40 to 76, with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis. After a washout period to make sure there were no lingering effects from other drugs, half the patients took 6 grams per day of MSM for 12 weeks. The other 25 patients got an identical-looking placebo.
Axelrod notes that 6 grams per day is a lot of MSM -- twice the dose she usually recommends.
The study results:
  • 21 patients in the MSM group and 19 patients in the placebo group completed the study.
  • Patients who got MSM reported 12% less pain and 14% more knee function than those who got the placebo.
  • Improvements in knee stiffness and overall symptoms favored the MSM group but were not significant.
"These findings suggest MSM may be considered for short-term use in osteoarthritis," Axelrod and colleagues write in their research abstract. "The clinical effects compared to placebo were, however, modest."

Arthritis Foundation Reacts

The Arthritis Foundation says it's unlikely this small study will change its 1999 statement on MSM. "At this time, MSM is classified by the Arthritis Foundation as an unproven remedy," the statement reads.
But Stephen Lindsey, MD, chief of rheumatology at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation Baton Rouge, says MSM is safe enough for patients to give it a try.

"I feel pretty good that MSM does no harm, but it is a pretty modest agent," Lindsey tells WebMD. "You will see an occasional person get good results. I would use it with glucosamine and chondroitin for patients wanting to try a supplement."

Lindsey agrees with the Arthritis Foundation that any arthritis patient using any supplement -- including MSM -- should tell their doctor what they are taking.

And he agrees with Axelrod that lifestyle changes -- weight control, modest exercise, and good diet -- are at least as important to arthritis treatment as any drug or supplement a person can take.

Best Skin Care Tips and Treatments Guest Article: 7 Benefits of MSM – The Miracle Supplement

by SHAWN
Biologically active sulfur is one of the most critical nutrients for our bodies to remain youthful and energetic.  As we age, along with a diet deficient in essential nutrients, our bodies become stiff, our cells become rigid, and our overall energy begins to rapidly decelerate.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is an organic sulfur compound that’s naturally derived during the earth’s rain cycle.  Sulfur is present in many natural unprocessed foods, but it’s quickly lost during the cooking process.  MSM is gaining a lot of attention due to the recent focus on longevity and anti-aging technologies.

Here’s a list of 7 impressive benefits that MSM delivers:

1. Improves skin health and complexion
MSM is necessary for collagen production.  Sagging skin and wrinkles, as well as dry, cracked skin are all developed through a loss of collagen.  MSM works together with Vitamin C to build new, healthy tissues.  MSM can normalize collagen formation and radically improve skin health.

2. Improves flexibility
Research has shown that MSM is highly effective in improving joint flexibility.  Additionally, it helps to produce flexible skin and muscle tissue.  This leads to an increase in overall flexibility due to a restoration of the “juiciness” in the tissues.

3. Detoxifies the body
One of the most important features of MSM is that it makes your cells more permeable.  This means that it allows toxins and metabolic waste products to easily be moved out of the cells, while essential nutrients and hydration can be moved in.  It’s a calcium phosphate dissolver, so it has a remarkable ability to break up the bad calcium that’s at the root of degenerative diseases.

4. Strengthens hair and nails
Collagen and keratin and both critical for the production of healthy hair and nails.  MSM is a bonafide “beauty mineral” that provides the sulfur needed to produce collagen and keratin.  It’s also highly noted to contribute to exceptional strength and thickness of the hair and nails, which can be noticed in just a couple weeks of consistent use.

5. Accelerates healing
Lactic acid and other byproducts cause pain and soreness in the body.  MSM increases the ability of the body to eliminate waste products at the cellular level.  This speeds recovery and frees up more energy for rebuilding.

6. Naturally Increases energy
Due to the increased permeability of the cells, less energy is required to deal with the accumulation of toxins.  This results in more energy being redirected towards activity and necessary healing.  Digestion is the biggest energy requirement of the body (Approximately 70-80% of your energy is spent on digestion each day). MSM increases the absorption of nutrients so that the energy expenditure on digestion is vastly reduced.

7. Anti-inflammatory
MSM is a powerful anti-inflammatory due to its ability to allow metabolic wastes to be removed from the cells.  Excess weight on the body is actually inflammation.  The cells of the body are chronically inflamed and retaining the byproducts of metabolic processes.  Sulfur needs to be present In order for these toxins and wastes to be removed from the body.  When these byproducts can be removed from the system, then the cells can also dispose of excess fluids that were being stored as a buffer.  What results is a natural and effective reduction in unwanted weight.
