Skin Treatments Guest Article: Shea Butter Benefits and Uses

HeavlyRooted-header

Introduction to Shea Butter?
Shea Butter has been around for quite some time, centuries in fact.  Shea Butter is local to Africa, which is where it is used the most for its benefits to skin and hair. Recently, though, it seems as though Shea Butter's benefits have been discovered off continent. This is because Shea Butter is beneficial to all people, races and nationalities, not just any one group! You can find Shea Butter in its pure form, or as an ingredient in other products.

What is Shea Butter?
Shea Butter is only found in Africa.  It is extracted from the seeds of the Shea-Karite tree. These seeds or nuts are then removed of their outer shell.  These nuts are then crushed by hand so that they can be slowly roasted into a nice butter.  After this is done, it is kneaded by hand in large basin of water to separate the oils. It's this fatty acid that gives Shea Butter its unique natural restorative properties and makes it far superior to other organic butters. Finally, the Shea Butter is removed off the top of the pot, and cooled until it hardens.

Shea Butter is an all natural organic product (edible), and as a result one will vary slightly from another in smell, appearance, and quality.  The majority of the Shea Butter variation found will depend on where the Shea Butter is produced and how or if the Shea Butter is refined.

Shea Butter Appearance & Composition?
Shea butter should be yellowish or ivory colored. White Shea Butter can be found, and usually has this color because it has been highly refined.  Heavily Rooted does not endorse refined Shea Butter because it's original restorative properties would have diminished.

How Does or Should Shea Butter Smell?
Shea Butter is a natural organic product, and thus has a natural nutty smell. This smell isn't unpleasant to most, but some manufactures may include a fragrance to counter the natural smell of the Shea Butter. If you have an unrefined Shea Butter that has no smell, it is probably old.  This is because Shea Butter loses its smell over time.  Once the smell is gone, it is best to dispose of the remaining Shea Butter.

For unrefined Shea Butter, the natural smell is removed during the refining process  just like most of the natural and organic restorative properties the Shea Butter once held.

Is all Shea Butter the same?
No, not all Shea Butter is the same. As you look deeper into Shea Butter you will find two major categories.  unrefined Shea Butter, and refined Shea Butter.  The difference lies in how the Shea Butter is extracted from the nut of the Shea-Karite tree as detailed earlier.

Unrefined Shea Butter is extracted in the process detailed above, using water.  This is done usually by hand in an African village, but will leave many of the natural restorative properties in the Shea Butter.
Refined Shea Butter may be treated with chemicals that remove color and it's natural smell, rather than using water.  These chemicals tend to strip not just the smell and color, but many of the restorative qualities that make Shea Butter advantageous over so many other butters.

Shea Butter Uses?
Shea Butter is often used as a base for medical ointments, and has been claimed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Shea Butter is also claimed to be effective treatment for the following conditions: fading scars, eczema, burns, rashes, dry skin (moisturizer), sun burn, skin peeling, dark spots, skin discolorations, blemishes, wrinkles, soften skin, chapped lips, stretch marks (pregnancy), wrinkles, hair luster and irritation from psoriasis.

Shea Butter is effective in at least four categories: Anti Aging, Healing Aide, Prevention, Skin Protection.

Best Skin Care Tips and Treatments Guest Article: MSM - What You Need to Know

by Eleanor Duse

MSM Benefits

Sulfur seems to be important in the strength and maintenance of joint tissue, especially cartilage. Since sulfur is a significant component of MSM, one possible benefit of MSM is in the treatment of joint problems such as sports injuries, osteoarthritis and tendinitis. MSM also seems to help reduce inflammation [source: MSM Guide].

Many people with joint injuries or early signs of osteoarthritis take supplements such as glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin in an effort to stave off further joint damage [source: Shiel]. Although its benefits have not been proven, you might also be able to use MSM this way -- either as a supplement or as a topical gel on the skin of the affected joint [sources: Mayo ClinicMSM Guide].

It's important to note that MSM is not an acute pain remedy. Patients and doctors alike hope that MSM helps the body's own repair and maintenance systems work better -- but if you've just sprained your ankle, you should be reaching for the ibuprofen, not the MSM.

There are a few indications that MSM may help with certain respiratory conditions, such as asthma, seasonal allergies and snoring. But clinical proof is slim. Many more studies are needed to establish whether MSM has true medical benefits, and if so, what they are [sources: LangMayo Clinic].
At least one doctor notes that, while the body does need sulfur -- which is an essential mineral -- supplemental MSM may not be the best way to get it. Dietary sulfur comes from the digestion of protein-rich foods (meat and dairy products, legumes, eggs and nuts), so you may be getting enough from whatever source of protein you choose to eat [source: Lang].

The nutritional-supplement industry touts MSM as a muscle-builder and a hair-grower. We'll explore those claims in more detail later.

Even if the claims of MSM's effectiveness need more proof, it might be tempting to take the supplement anyway, just in case it does work. Can MSM ever hurt you?

MSM Side Effects

As nutritional supplements go, MSM seems to be one of the safer ones out there. No studies have established any toxicity or toxic buildup [source: MSM Guide]. If you take too much MSM, you may experience a bit of diarrhea, nausea or headache [source: Mayo Clinic]. But that's probably it. However, there may be other side effects depending on the quality and production of your MSM supplements.
Sulfur is what makes rotten eggs smell so bad, and some sulfur-based supplements have been known to have particularly stinky side effects. MSM typically doesn't do this, but you should make sure your supplement doesn't contain other sulfur compounds [source: The Arthritis and Glucosamine Information Center].

MSM occurs naturally in several foods, such as pine nuts and milk, which has led to speculation that people with some food allergies can't take MSM supplements [source: MSM Guide]. Although there are nutritional supplements (such as glucosamine) that are off-limits to certain food allergy patients, that's not the case for MSM. All MSM in supplements is synthetically produced [source: MSM Guide].

However, that doesn't mean you're home free on the allergy front. Different manufacturers may combine MSM with different ingredients. Before taking MSM, you do need to check these ingredients for allergens or other chemicals that might be contraindicated with your current prescriptions.

Even more importantly, be aware that the quality of synthetic MSM can differ dramatically. Some inferior MSM supplements contain trace amounts of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, and those most certainly can build up in your system, with toxic effects. If it's produced at plants that produce other synthetic chemicals, some MSM may contain other contaminants, such as benzene or -- depending on the manufacturer -- pesticides [source:Bergstrom Nutrition].

How do you steer clear of such dangers? Look for MSM that has been purified by distillation, not crystallization. The crystallization process is where toxic elements can accumulate. Distilled MSM, on the other hand, ought to be chemically identical to the naturally occurring molecules [source: MSM Guide].
What if you're hoping to use MSM to build up something non-toxic -- say, hair or muscle?

Skin Treatments Guest Article: Modest' Arthritis Benefit Seen From MSM

Sulfur Supplement Helps Relieve Pain From Knee Osteoarthritis, Small Study Suggests

WebMD Health News
Aug. 24, 2005

A sulfur supplement called MSM offers "modest" pain relief from knee osteoarthritis, a small study suggests.

MSM -- methylsulfonylmethane -- is a popular supplement for which a number of health claims are made. However, rigorous scientific studies of MSM are few and far between.

Now there's a bit more evidence, thanks to a pilot study presented at this week's meeting of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians in Phoenix.

Study leader Leslie Axelrod, ND, of the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Ariz., has already been prescribing MSM to patients with arthritis. She says she's glad to have evidence to back up her clinical impression.

"MSM is a viable option for the treatment of osteoarthritis," Axelrod tells WebMD. "It is valuable to use it in conjunction with dietexercise, and other things that are beneficial for arthritis patients. Our study shows that MSM significantly reduces pain and increases physical function in patients with knee osteoarthritis."

Small Study, Modest Benefit for MSM

Axelrod's team enrolled 50 men and women, aged 40 to 76, with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis. After a washout period to make sure there were no lingering effects from other drugs, half the patients took 6 grams per day of MSM for 12 weeks. The other 25 patients got an identical-looking placebo.
Axelrod notes that 6 grams per day is a lot of MSM -- twice the dose she usually recommends.
The study results:
  • 21 patients in the MSM group and 19 patients in the placebo group completed the study.
  • Patients who got MSM reported 12% less pain and 14% more knee function than those who got the placebo.
  • Improvements in knee stiffness and overall symptoms favored the MSM group but were not significant.
"These findings suggest MSM may be considered for short-term use in osteoarthritis," Axelrod and colleagues write in their research abstract. "The clinical effects compared to placebo were, however, modest."

Arthritis Foundation Reacts

The Arthritis Foundation says it's unlikely this small study will change its 1999 statement on MSM. "At this time, MSM is classified by the Arthritis Foundation as an unproven remedy," the statement reads.
But Stephen Lindsey, MD, chief of rheumatology at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation Baton Rouge, says MSM is safe enough for patients to give it a try.

"I feel pretty good that MSM does no harm, but it is a pretty modest agent," Lindsey tells WebMD. "You will see an occasional person get good results. I would use it with glucosamine and chondroitin for patients wanting to try a supplement."

Lindsey agrees with the Arthritis Foundation that any arthritis patient using any supplement -- including MSM -- should tell their doctor what they are taking.

And he agrees with Axelrod that lifestyle changes -- weight control, modest exercise, and good diet -- are at least as important to arthritis treatment as any drug or supplement a person can take.

Best Skin Care Tips and Treatments Guest Article: 7 Benefits of MSM – The Miracle Supplement

by SHAWN
Biologically active sulfur is one of the most critical nutrients for our bodies to remain youthful and energetic.  As we age, along with a diet deficient in essential nutrients, our bodies become stiff, our cells become rigid, and our overall energy begins to rapidly decelerate.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is an organic sulfur compound that’s naturally derived during the earth’s rain cycle.  Sulfur is present in many natural unprocessed foods, but it’s quickly lost during the cooking process.  MSM is gaining a lot of attention due to the recent focus on longevity and anti-aging technologies.

Here’s a list of 7 impressive benefits that MSM delivers:

1. Improves skin health and complexion
MSM is necessary for collagen production.  Sagging skin and wrinkles, as well as dry, cracked skin are all developed through a loss of collagen.  MSM works together with Vitamin C to build new, healthy tissues.  MSM can normalize collagen formation and radically improve skin health.

2. Improves flexibility
Research has shown that MSM is highly effective in improving joint flexibility.  Additionally, it helps to produce flexible skin and muscle tissue.  This leads to an increase in overall flexibility due to a restoration of the “juiciness” in the tissues.

3. Detoxifies the body
One of the most important features of MSM is that it makes your cells more permeable.  This means that it allows toxins and metabolic waste products to easily be moved out of the cells, while essential nutrients and hydration can be moved in.  It’s a calcium phosphate dissolver, so it has a remarkable ability to break up the bad calcium that’s at the root of degenerative diseases.

4. Strengthens hair and nails
Collagen and keratin and both critical for the production of healthy hair and nails.  MSM is a bonafide “beauty mineral” that provides the sulfur needed to produce collagen and keratin.  It’s also highly noted to contribute to exceptional strength and thickness of the hair and nails, which can be noticed in just a couple weeks of consistent use.

5. Accelerates healing
Lactic acid and other byproducts cause pain and soreness in the body.  MSM increases the ability of the body to eliminate waste products at the cellular level.  This speeds recovery and frees up more energy for rebuilding.

6. Naturally Increases energy
Due to the increased permeability of the cells, less energy is required to deal with the accumulation of toxins.  This results in more energy being redirected towards activity and necessary healing.  Digestion is the biggest energy requirement of the body (Approximately 70-80% of your energy is spent on digestion each day). MSM increases the absorption of nutrients so that the energy expenditure on digestion is vastly reduced.

7. Anti-inflammatory
MSM is a powerful anti-inflammatory due to its ability to allow metabolic wastes to be removed from the cells.  Excess weight on the body is actually inflammation.  The cells of the body are chronically inflamed and retaining the byproducts of metabolic processes.  Sulfur needs to be present In order for these toxins and wastes to be removed from the body.  When these byproducts can be removed from the system, then the cells can also dispose of excess fluids that were being stored as a buffer.  What results is a natural and effective reduction in unwanted weight.

Skin Treatments Guest Article: Exfoliating is the best way to keep your skin soft…

5 Benefits of Exfoliating your Skin

5 Benefits of Exfoliating your Skin

Exfoliating is the best way to keep your skin soft…

and looking young so here are 5 quick benefits…But first what is exfoliating ?

“Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells that collect on the outer surface of the skin. Dead skin cells are buffed off with an abrasive  substance, example a body scrub in which they use salt sugar or coffee grounds.”

Skin brushing, exfoliating cloths and gloves are also used as a method of exfoliation and it produces good blood circulation.

For your face I suggest to purchase very gentle exfoliant,  look for products that contain natural ingredients and that are specifically used for face. It’s plenty on the market to choose from just be cautious of anything that uses nut shells some are just too abrasive on the skin and can damage it.

My favorite method of exfoliating is using the recycled bath & shower gloves by http://www.ecotools.com I found them to be gentle enough for my face and body use with your favorite cleanser. If you have dry sensitive skin exfoliate once a week if your more combination skin a few times a week is recommended but if you have oily skin 5 times a week or more will produce great benefits. Be sure not to over do it pay attention to your skin and how it feels.

Here are my 5 Benefits of Exfoliating your Skin

1. Exfoliating keeps the skin soft and glowing
2. Buffing the dead skin away will keep your pores from clogging which keeps acne under control
3. Exfoliating speeds up your skins natural renewal process and helps your moisturizer penetrate into the skin deeper
4. removal of dead skin cells helps with skin discoloration (uneven tone)
5. routine exfoliation leads to visibly brighter skin and it keeps fine lines and wrinkles in check

Guest Skin Care Treatment Article: How to Make Body Mist Last Longer

How to Make Body Mist Last Longer

By Kathryn Hatter, eHow Contributor
perfumebottleMake body mist last longer after you apply it.
A common complaint among women is the speed with which body mists disappear on the skin after spraying them. Because of the chemical composition of body mists, they evaporate quickly on the skin, often leaving you without any remaining scent even a short time after application. Make body mist last longer on your skin by preparing your skin properly before you spray. When you make sure your skin is ready to receive and hold the spray, the scent of the body mist will last longer throughout the day.

Things You'll Need

  • Unscented lotion (or a scent that matches the body mist)
  • Brush
  • Cotton ball

Instructions

  1. Prepare to apply the body mist to yourself immediately after towel drying off after a bath or shower. When you apply body mist at this time, your pores are open and they will retain the scent for a longer time.
  2. Slather either an unscented lotion or a lotion with the same scent as your body mist liberally over your body where you will apply the body spray. Pay special attention to pulse points (the throat, the wrists, inside the elbows, behind your knees and between the breasts).
  3. Spray the body mist toward yourself from a distance of approximately 1 foot, directing it toward the areas of your body where you applied the lotion. After you spray the body mist, step into the mist in the air to allow the body mist to cover your skin completely. Repeat this spraying technique until you apply the body mist to all the desired areas of your body.
  4. Allow the body mist to dry completely before you dress.
  5. Spray the body mist lightly onto a brush and brush the body mist through your hair to infuse a light scent to your hair.
  6. Saturate a cotton ball with body mist and tuck it into your bra. The cotton ball will stay filled with the scents of the body mist and will project the scent out from you throughout the day.

Skin Care Ingredient Article: Aloe Vera & Skin Benefits

(Just FYI, our Aloe Vera Body Spray is infused with Aloe Vera and is on SALE this month.  Check out HERE!)

Aloe Vera & Skin Benefits

By Katie Regan
fotolia_3379226_XS

About Aloe Vera

Aloe vera comes from the aloe plant, a succulent native to Africa that has been used medicinally for centuries. Aloe leaves ooze a clear gel when broken off from the rest of the plant that can be applied topically to heal wounds and soothe skin, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The green part of the leaf that surrounds the gel can be used to produce a laxative juice called aloe latex, according to the NCCAM. Aloe plants are sub-tropical and can grow indoors or outdoors as long as they receive plenty of sunshine and have no chance of freezing.

Aloe Vera for Burns

Aloe vera is primarily used to soothe blistered, sunburned skin, according to Aloe-Vera-Studies.org. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and it supports skin cell regeneration. Aloe vera also contains active compounds that may decrease pain, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, and for this reason provides a cooling, refreshing feeling when applied to skin. Because aloe vera is largely made up of water, it evaporates quickly and can be re-applied as frequently as desired.

Aloe Vera for Skin Conditions

Aloe vera contains 19 of the 20 amino acids required by the body for good health, according to AloeVeraBenefits.com, and for this reason it is a powerful healing agent. In addition to treating burned skin, aloe is useful in moisturizing dry, flaky skin. It has also shown some promise in treating more serious and persistent conditions such as genital herpes, dandruff, psoriasis, canker sores, skin ulcers and others, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Guest Skin Care Treatment Article: How to Use Body Spray

How to Use Body Spray

By Laura Leiva, eHow Contributor

Using a body spray is an ideal way to add subtle fragrance to the body without going overboard. A body spray is lighter than a perfume or cologne, and it is often sprayed in various spots on the body after showering. Although body spray is applied more liberally than traditional perfume or cologne, it is still important to use in moderate amounts to prevent nasal irritation for others or overwhelming them with intense fragrances. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need
  • Body spray
  • Clean body

Instructions:

  1. Use a body spray after taking a shower. Sprays are not meant to mask body odor caused by a lack of hygiene, so use once the body is clean and an anti-perspirant or deodorant is used.
  2. Apply the body spray to pulse points in order to allow the fragrance to last longer. Points include the inside of wrists, knees and elbows, as well as neck, chest and behind the ears. Choose only a couple of these locations to prevent overdoing the fragrance.
  3. Try using various sprays on different days of the week. Choose smells that are appealing from retail stores like Target or Bath and Body Works, where both men and women have an ample selection of sprays and scents.
  4. Use a small amount of body spray, even if it does not seem like enough. As we apply the spray, our noses become accustomed to the scent, which causes over usage. In addition, the scent is never as strong to the individual wearing it as it is to those around her. Only use a few spritzes at a couple select locations on the body.
  5. Never spray onto the face, since the ingredients can cause irritation or dry out the skin.

The Benefits of Aloe Vera: Skin Care, Digestion and More

By Nancy Chute

Aloe Vera is a natural remedy used for burns, scrapes and digestive health. The herb can even be used as a natural cosmetic and easily grown in any home garden.

I grow my own treatment for minor, burns on a kitchen windowsill where it's always fresh and ready for emergencies. This living remedy, aloe vera, is also a great plant to have around for scrapes or rashes and, as it turns out, many other ailments too.

The benefits of aloe vera are not an old wives' fantasy. Its healing qualities are medically recognized and many creams, ointments, and cosmetics made from its juices are sold in this country and all over the world. Still, it's less expensive-and more effective-to grow your own!
The plant's secret is the clear jelly stored inside its thick succulent leaves — a juice which forms a protective coating over a cut, burn, or abrasion and so promotes healing. Best of all, this natural ointment needs no processing to be effective. Just break off a leaf, slit it open, and smear the gel liberally on an affliction. Then keep the area moist to draw out the pain.
Unused portions of the healing greenery will stay fresh wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator, where it will remain ready for repeat applications or for the next crisis that comes along. In cold weather a severed leaf also keeps well on a bathroom windowsill while a rash or pimple is being doctored.

Aloe Vera and Burns

Our first "burn plant" quickly fascinated our children. They saw me use its juice to treat minor mishaps with hot saucepans and became anxious to make the thick jelly work its magic for them, too. Soon, a scraped leg from a bicycle accident gave them the opportunity. I felt like a witch doctor as I slit a leaf lengthwise and carefully patted the gel on the abrasion but the victim claimed that the treatment worked wonders.
We've since relieved the pain and redness of sunburn, cleared up a persistent diaper rash, and healed assorted skin blemishes in the same way. Sometimes I've even taped a slice of aloe vera directly to an affliction to keep the injury moist with its healing jelly.
Some experts say that such ailments should be treated with leaves at least one foot long, since only mature aloe vera foliage possesses healing qualities. I've used smaller shoots, however, with good, results but have noticed that larger, older spears do have a stronger odor and yellowish rather than clear jelly. No doubt these are signs of "bigger medicine."

Aloe Vera and Skin Benefits

Our few experiments with aloe vera have explored only its most common uses. I understand, though, that this remarkable plant (now under scientific investigation for its beneficial effects on X-ray and other radiation burns) has been known over the centuries for a variety of healing powers.
Along the Texas - Mexico border, for instance, old timers will clean quite a large wound with antiseptic and then bandage a cut aloe vera leaf to it, just as the Indians did. Another leaf is applied when the dressing is changed. Folks in those parts put the gel on the skin to protect against insect bites or to relieve itching, too.
I've also heard that Mexican women use the plant cosmetically by rubbing the leaves on their faces to prevent wrinkles and the men use it as a shampoo to prevent baldness and graying. The thick juice is massaged into the hair and scalp which absorb it within a few hours-and left on overnight. The next morning, when the dried gel is washed off (no soap is necessary) — lo, the hair is silky, manageable, and supposedly more luxuriant than before!

Skin Care Ingredient Article: Olive Squalane (formerly FitoDerm)

(Just FYI, our Face & Eye Toning Cream is infused with Olive Squalane and is on SALE this month.  Check out HERE!)

What is Olive Squalane (formerly FitoDerm)?

Olive Squalane, formerly FitoDerm, is a high purity vegetable Squalane obtained from Olives. Well known as Nature's Facelift, Olive Squalane, formerly FitoDerm, is a botanical lipid that mirrors human lipids in molecular structure and weight (scientists found that the skin's sebaceous glands synthesized approximately 10-12% Squalane). The Olive Squalane, formerly FitoDerm, offered by Ingredients To Die For is the plant-derived alternative to the animal-derived (shark liver oil) of the past. This valuable lipid is extremely compatible with the skin and is safe for all skin types, making it a great choice for regenerative skin care, and anti-aging products.

Olive Squalane, formerly FitoDerm, is an, absolutely essential oil for the skin, especially when a regenerative effect is desired.  The skin has sufficient levels when it's young, and healthy.  As we age the levels drop considerably and by the time we're in our mid-thirties, and forties, we no longer have sufficient levels to maintain healthy skin.  It is believed  that this drop off is, in part, responsible for many of the signs of aging skin, including the tendency to become easily damaged, thinner, and lack lustre.  The addition of Olive Squalane, formerly FitoDerm, can help to replenish the natural levels lost through the normal aging process, contributing regenerative activity to restore a more youthful appearance, and resistance to inflammatory conditions.

If you've been looking for a way to make your body oils, and emulsions, feel more silky, and powdery, Olive Squalane, formerly FitoDerm, is one of the simplest, and most pure, solutions.  Sure, you could add a starch, or some other drying ingredient but, you'll also be adding the characteristics and activity of those other additives.  With Olive Squalane, formerly FitoDerm, even at 2%, offers a soft smooth feel to products, softens and nurtures the skin, and also enhances absorption into the tissues, delivering the abundance of nutrients where they can go to work.
